The Hare and Hounds in West Derby Village, Liverpool has been raising money for Liverpool Mummies with Cancer. The pub has managed to raise a total of £1,800 so far, which will be donated to help local mums suffering from cancer on their journey to recovery.

When General Manager, Mary Rimmer’s friend (and her daughters sister-in-law) Anastacia McCrave Carroll, was diagnosed with grade three inflammatory breast cancer at 33, she was devastated. Having only given birth to her son, James, seven months prior, Anastacia felt completely lost and isolated. She searched round to see if there was a support group she could join to talk to other mums in a similar situation. Finding little luck, in November 2018, Anastacia helped set up Liverpool Mummies with Cancer, a support group for mums going through harsh treatments and recovery from cancer.

One in seven women in the UK will develop breast cancer[1] in their lifetime. The money raised by the Hare and Hounds will be used to help fund treatments such as aromatherapy (the use of essential oils to help reduce stress, pain and anxiety caused by rigorous cancer treatments) and allow members to meet up for coffee and even the odd spa day.

After undergoing surgery and receiving the news she was cancer free in March this year, it was like winning the lottery for Anastacia and her family. The pub has since organised several raffles, bingo events and a Robbie Williams tribute night to raise money for the cause. Several of the team, Anastacia’s mum and friends also completed this year’s 5K Race for Life.

In total, their efforts and support from the local community have enabled them to raise £1,800.

Mary Rimmer, General Manager of The Hare and Hounds, said: “It’s been heart-warming to raise money for this particular cause and to see so many people get on board with our fundraising events. We are so pleased with how much we have raised and the Hare and Hounds will continue to support mums with cancer. Anastacia is a true inspiration and to be able to support her and others in similar situations is truly rewarding.

“We must thank Liverpool Football Club and Urban Decay for all their support – they offered us vouchers for meals and makeup to use as raffle prizes. It really is for a great cause and it is inspiring how much everyone has been happy to help. We will continue to raise money for mums battling cancer as it is something which is very close to our hearts.”
