The Faraday [2 Church Street, Epsom KT17 4NY] has rescued the Swedish Whitebeam tree at the front of the pub. The deciduous tree, planted in the 1990’s and protected by way of Conservation Area status, required swift action and due care in order save it.
As the tree grew, the decking surrounding it began to restrict its growth. The pub team, with the help of Epsom and Ewell Tree Advisory Board, quickly got to the root of the problem, cutting back the decking back to give the tree room to grow. This swift remedial action has saved the tree.
Mike Ford, Chairman of the Epsom and Ewell Tree Advisory Board, said “I am highly impressed with the speed and quality of the action taken by the Faraday. As soon as we pointed out the danger that the tree was in, they responded straight away; had they not done so, the tree – which falls within the Conservation Area and is therefore covered by certain protections – would undoubtably have died in the near future.
“As it is, however, it will make a full recovery – and that is entirely down to the swift, community spirited and environmentally responsible remedial action that the team set in place. As a result, the Swedish Whitebeam should continue to flourish for many years to come.”
Holding Manager at the Faraday, Samantha Camara, said: “We were really concerned when we realised that the beautiful tree in our garden was struggling to thrive. It was planted before the decking was put down and clearly it has outgrown the space that was originally created for it. We took advice from the local Tree Advisory Board and acted immediately to save it. It’s a ‘tree-mendous’ relief to know that it will now live on for many years to come!”
