The Bowling Green, on Oxford Street in Leicester, is holding a charity five-aside football tournament in aid of Acorns Children’s Hospice and Prostate Cancer UK on Sunday 21st July.
Kicking off at 12pm, the tournament is £40 per team to enter and will be held at the Aylestone Park Recreation Ground football pitches. Competing teams will first take part in the group stages, then the knock-out round, before the top two squads battle it out in the final. The winning team will be awarded the first ever Bowling Green Five-Aside Trophy, as well as a generous bar-tab to spend at the pub.
Matt Harris, Deputy Manager of the Bowling Green, and the brains behind the operation, already has 15 teams signed up to play and hopes to run the tournament every year. He has the happy task of refereeing some of the matches, as well as taking part with his colleagues in the pub’s own team.
Matt said: “We’ve already raised £600 for charity and registration is still open! We’re going to split the money evenly between Acorns Children’s Hospice and Prostate Cancer UK, which are both amazing charities.
“I think I’m going to be exhausted by the end of the day, refereeing and playing, but it’ll all be worth it to potentially make a difference in someone’s life. I want to thank everyone on my team here at the pub for getting involved and helping me out, both with the organising and playing football with me!”
The event comes as part of Matt’s participation in Stonegate Pub Company’s ‘Accelerator Programme’. The course is part of its award-winning development programme, designed to give staff the skills and knowledge they need to succeed and proceed within the company.
