Anyone who frequents the Foundry in Aberdeen will know that it offers a haven for sports fans, but now it has been recognised as one of the best pubs for sport, not just in Aberdeen or even in Scotland, but nationally, in the Great British Pub Awards!
Renowned for the amount of sporting events it screens, customers know that the team at the Foundry will go out of their way to accommodate requests to watch a particular sport. General Manager, Mark Joseph, said: “If someone asks for a sport and we are open, have the channel, and a free box, we will show anything, however obscure!”
Football is huge at the Foundry with all games screened, from Premier League matches through to under 21’s, as well as all international games and women’s football, which is becoming increasingly popular. Equally popular are darts, rugby, golf, Formula 1, cricket, NFL, horse racing, tennis, boxing and much more!
Mark added: “Our ambition has always been to become the number one pub for sports viewing and with a mixture of 40 TV’s and big screens throughout the pub, three Sky boxes, soon to become four, and Premier Sports, no matter where you are you will not miss a minute of the match you want to watch. Through our investment in technology, sound and light we bring the stadium to the fans, making all sporting occasions affordable and creating an unrivalled atmosphere which offers the next best thing to being at the match. The whole team is proud and excited to have reached the final of the Great British Pub Awards and we really hope we can go all the way and win it!”
The Foundry’s engagement with the community extends beyond showing sports matches in the pub. It is also closely involved with Aberdeen FC Community Trust, raising funds for the charity to help less advantaged people in the area. It also initiated a “Boogie in the Bar’ initiative, aimed at bringing together older people of all abilities together with discos, healthy walks and memory lane quizzes, as well as the fundraising undertaken to support them.
Ed Bedington, organiser of the Great British Pub Awards, said: “These awards are the most rigorous of their kind for the pub sector and it’s a real achievement to make it this far into the competition.”
The Foundry is one of just six finalists in the Great British Pub Awards 2019’s ‘Best for Sport’ category. The winners will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on September 5.
