Acclaimed Bristol pub, The Cider Press, has been voted one of the best cider bars in the country for its spectacular range of traditional and flavoured ciders on draught and in bottle.

Situated on Bristol’s Gloucester Road, The Cider Press has established itself locally as the leading cider bar with product quality, knowledge and expertise second-to-none.

General Manager Stephen ‘Doc’ Docherty was ecstatic on hearing the news that The Cider Press, which is owned by Stonegate Pub Company, had been named a finalist in the prestigious John Smith’s Great British Pub Awards.

“It’s fantastic news – the staff are all buzzing with the excitement of it,” said Doc, who has worked hard with his team to establish The Cider Press as a dedicated cider house. Even the décor of the pub pays homage to the humble cider apple, with an array of fantastic murals and artworks.

“We have simply the best range of ciders in the region and hold regular cider-tastings to showcase our amazing variety to customers. For the summer, we have brought in some wonderfully refreshing flavoured ciders, including Tutti Frutti, Strawberry & Lime and Passion Fruit to take full advantage of the exceptional weather we’re enjoying,” said Doc, adding that The Cider Press also has a spectacular choice of craft beers and spirits too, with over 40 gins and 30 vodkas.

On the bar there are a stunning 28 taps, with lines to cider boxes kept in tip top condition in an immaculate cellar. If that seems overwhelming for some, the ‘Cider Nuts’, aka members of the bar team, are always on hand to discuss, delight and deliver an all-round great experience for customers.

There are also regular cider events, including tastings, where customers can enjoy nine different ciders (one-third of a pint each) with tasting notes and discussions, plus live music every Saturday night, as well as the great sporting action from Sky Sports – all offered with the option of tasty, classic pub food.

In the awards’ submission, Doc told the judges of the competition: “Everything we do shouts ‘cider’. From our name, The Cider Press, to our fabulous wall art…. The team and I are passionate about cider and this pride is tangible. Our cider lovers appreciate our huge and varied range and product knowledge, and we are very good at encouraging other customers to give our flavoured and other styles of cider a try.”

Ed Bedington, organiser of the John Smith’s Great British Pub Awards, said: “These awards are the most rigorous of their kind for the pub sector and it’s a real achievement to make it this far into the competition.”

The judging process is three-rounds and includes a visit by the judges as part of the final process. The winner will be announced at an award’s ceremony at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on September 6.

The Cider Press is one of just five finalists in the John Smith’s Great British Pub Awards 2018’s ‘Best Cider Bar/Pub’ category.
