Wolverhampton South West MP Eleanor Smith took time out to visit the George Wallis pub at Wolverhampton’ Mander Centre last week to see behind the scenes of the £200,000 investment almost six months on from its completion.

The pub was modernised last November, in keeping with the centre development, bringing cask and craft beer, stylish design, ten sports screens airing Sky and BT Sports, and traditional pub food. The renovation was a boost to the town’s daytime and night-time economy, offering a local amenity for high street shoppers, concert-goers and sports fans.

The local MP was introduced to the front and back of house team, learning of Stonegate’s apprenticeships and careers in management that highlighted the important role pubs and bars play in community and local economy.

Ms Smith commented: “Wolverhampton has its own identity and deserves recognition for all we have to offer. Investment in the city centre is part of this, and the renovation of pubs like the George Wallis contribute to our economy.  It was great to see first-hand the training and career opportunities offered to young people to develop themselves in the hospitality industry.”

General manager Sergio Marques said: “It was great to meet with Eleanor and show how the George Wallis has become an all day amenity contributing to the local economy.”

Area Manager Jamie Baldero was on hand to give Ms Smith the guided tour: “We appreciate Eleanor visiting the George Wallis to see the renovation and to meet the local team.  This investment forms part of our annual £50 Million spend developing our pubs across the country providing enhanced community facilities, creating jobs and careers for people of all ages. Hospitality is an important business sector generating significant income for government and we are pleased that our local MP recognises the importance of British pubs and bars.”
