The writing was always on the wall, quite literally, for the future of the most aptly named ‘The Old Brewery’, Marlow High Street’s newest pub, opening 13th March after a £300,000 restoration.

The surprise discovery by builders of a hidden old fireplace with a “TW & S” inscription in the wall, dates back to when the ‘Old Brewery’ pub was the original ‘Thomas Wethered & Sons’ brewery, founded in the 18th century. The inscription is now set to be a feature of the pub after owners altered plans to retain it, and with it, the legacy of beer heritage.

“Typical of brewing history the ‘Old Brewery’ had a few owners, eventually becoming Whitbread Wethereds, and then brewery offices when it stopped brewing in 1988,” said manager Indrit Bala.

“More recently the property was a Slug and Lettuce, which is a great High Street format, but restoring the building to a proper pub centred around traditional pub values, is the perfect tribute to its heritage.”

The transformed Slug & Lettuce has brought with it eight new jobs and as well as retro pub values, a modern edge with sports, craft beer, Rock ‘n’ Roll bingo, Fifa nights and Marlow’s only 2am licence.

“We’re instilling the social elements of the pub too with fun weekends including offering groups a pre- booked area with mini bar,” added Indrit. “We’re stylish but the niche is that we’re not niche. There’s a lot of eager anticipation for the opening in the town.”

Just in time for the 17th March Six Nations final, and ahead of the World Cup, BT and Sky Sports multi-boxes have been installed, broadcast across nine HD TVs and a big screen. Pay Per View events such as the big Joshua fight 31st March are bound to be a huge draw – as is the Sports Table Service during game time to make sure no score is ever missed.
