The Pen and Wig on Park Grove in Cardiff will reopen to the public at 11.30am on Friday 23rd August following an investment of £150,000, which has seen the creation of four new jobs and the promotion of a part-time member of staff to full-time.
Owned and operated by the award-winning Stonegate Pub Company, the Pen and Wig has been closed for 11 days to make way for the transformation which includes a revamped beer garden and outdoor area; new facilities throughout the pub; the introduction of a new menu and an increase in the range of real ales and ciders from five to ten hand pulls.
Geraint Howells, general manager of the Pen and Wig said: “It’s only a few days until we open but already the pub looks incredible and I’m really looking forward to showcasing the new-look Pen and Wig to new and existing customers. The team are also raring to go.
“The investment has really added to the soul of the pub – it has still retained the traditional elements but with a contemporary yet comfortable twist. There’s a lot of affection for the pub from our regulars and, of course the team, which we hope to extend to a wider customer base. It truly is a great little pub.
“What is really exciting is the new food menu, which will be available seven days a week from 11.30am to 9.30pm. For example, the vegetarian dishes are greatly enhanced and there are a lot more dishes available on the menu from pub classics to burgers to lighter, fresher, healthier options where a number of selected dishes are under 500 calories. There really is something for everyone to enjoy.
“We’re also sourcing some of the best beers and ciders from local, regional and national brewers to ensure that the Pen and Wig remains synonymous with offering some of the best real ale in the city. We also have a promotion whereby Camra (Campaign for Real Ale) members are entitled to a 10% discount on real ales when they present their membership card when they order their drink. When we open, the following real ales and ciders will be available: Weston’s Old Rosie; Gwynt y Ddraig’s Black Dragon; Greene King’s Reserve IPA; Sharp’s Doom Bar; Brecon Brewing’s Twilight Beacons; Tiny Rebel’s Loki; Cottage Brewery’s Hurricane; Otley Brewing Company’s 09; Wye Valley’s Summer of 69 and topping it all off is Marston’s Pedigree. A number of premium, world beers have also been introduced such as Peroni Nastro Azzurro and Estrella Damm.
“It’s great to open in time for the bank holiday weekend and to help us celebrate the weekend in style, we’ll be putting on some live music on Saturday night with the help of a local band, the Three Wise Monkeys. We host a live music session every Saturday and we’re always on the look out for new bands and acts to play at the Pen and Wig. We’d encourage anyone that wants to play for our customers to get in touch.”
