One of Chingford’s oldest and most popular pubs, the Kings Head, has closed to make way for an investment of £200,000. Believed to have been built in the 1880s, the Kings Head will reopen to the public at midday on Friday 8th February. As a result of the refurbishment, three new jobs have been created at the pub.
Owned and operated by national pub operator, the Stonegate Pub Company, the Kings Head has built up a reputation for offering customers a wide and varied real ale range. Lovers of cask ale will be delighted to know that as part of the refurbishment, the pub will be extending its range from six to ten hand pumps, and will continue to source beers from breweries within a 20-mile radius of the pub as well as those from further afield. Once open, The Kings Head will offer beers from Brentwood, White Horse and Tring breweries.
CAMRA members will be entitled to a 10% discount on real ale when they present their membership card and customers can take advantage of a saving of up to 90p off cask ale every Monday from 5pm when all pints are available at £2.50.
Speaking about the changes that will be brought about by the refurbishment, Linzi Price, who has general manager of the Kings Head, said: “It’s been around four years since our last investment, which was a small sparkle so we are delighted that Stonegate, who took over the pub in November 2010, are investing in the Kings Head.
“We’ll be having new signage at the front of the building as well having the exterior repainted. We’ll be introducing a new outdoor area to the side of the pub with patio furniture, giant umbrellas and heaters where customers can dine or just enjoy a drink or two. The area will also be covered so customers will be able to enjoy the outdoor space, whatever the weather.
“Inside, the pub will have a new dark oak floor, a new bar, new furnishings and soft, subtle lighting helping to create even more of a warm, welcoming environment that will appeal to everyone.
“On our opening weekend, we have variety of entertainment planned including a pianist on Saturday night and on Sunday, from 8pm, we’ve organised a ‘Meet the Brewer’ session where a member of the Cottage Brewery in Somerset will be talking about their beers and sharing their knowledge and expertise. It’s an open house so everyone is welcome to come along. Real ale is my passion so I’ll be organising a ‘Meet the Brewer’ session on a regular basis. I like to seek out and find breweries that are under the radar, giving my customers the chance to discover new and interesting beers.

The Kings Head will also be offering a number of great food offers throughout the week including a Sunday Roast dinner with all the trimmings for £8.95. 50% off main meals, all day on Monday. Grill Nights every Tuesday where you can get a steak and a drink starting from £7.45 and Wednesday is Spice Night where you can get a range of curries starting at £6.95. The pub will also be hosting a quiz night on Sunday and Wednesday where cash prizes are on offer.
The Kings Head has Cask Marque status, which is an award for the quality of their cask ale. They are also listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide both nationally and locally.
