The Penny Black is due to reopen on Monday 1 August, following a £310,000 investment in the site.

The Penny Black remains a focal point in the community, with the investment bringing a new dining and service area to the very front of the pub. Opening the building up to welcome passing trade and guests who might be looking for just a quick tea or coffee or bite to eat during the day.

Internally, changes to the pub’s layout will see a single-level design for guests’ comfort, with its bar painted to give a new lease of life, along with the brand-new seating and soft furnishings being added.

The investment also includes the installation of nine large TVs with stadium-worthy surround sound creating an incredible sporting wall being installed to show the biggest sporting events. As well as this a dartboard and pool table are being installed, to keep that friendly competition going amongst guests.

Jamie Williams, General Manager at The Penny Black said “I am hugely excited about the refurbishment and reopening of The Penny Black. I believe that this investment in the pub, including the addition of our new outside dining area at the front, will see it remain at the heart of the local community.”

The new look comes with a new range of beers including Madri, Birra Moretti, and Brewdog Planet Pale Ale, alongside ciders such as Inchs. Alongside a vast range of wines from across the world, guests will also be able to book a booth and enjoy a bottle of spirit, including Smirnoff and Gordon’s Gin for £50 to celebrate their evening in style or try one of our tasty cocktails.

A new food menu is also being introduced, with the inclusion of a new breakfast bun, as well as favourites such as a full English breakfast and continental on offer to start the day off, the pub will continue to serve lunch and dinner with many traditional pub favourites, including burgers, fish and chips, and pies, until 8pm.

Jamie continued: “This is an exciting time for The Penny Black, we have lots of exciting plans for events and new menu ideas in the coming months, I have worked in this industry for over 15 years and I love it – I cannot wait to welcome our guests back into the pub once again with open arms.”

The venue is set to host monthly themed nights, together with weekly events such as its Monday Club, which will see brands such as Carling, Strongbow and John Smith, as well as House White Wine discounted up to 30%. Afternoon bingo and Cask Club will feature every Tuesday, and a student night on Thursdays from 5pm, with special offers including Jugs of Cocktails for just £5.

Friday and Saturday nights will see a pop takeover with a DJ performing from 9pm. There will also be special LGBTQ+ event with a drag DJ, making The Penny Black the place to be for nightlife in the area.
