The historic Earl of Strafford in Hooton Roberts, Rotherham has reopened after a £250,000 makeover serving the best in classic country pub food and drinks, just as it has done for hundreds of years.

The 16th century, Grade II listed manor house which was built as a home for the first Earl of Strafford, Sir Thomas Wentworth, now offers a quality home-from-home experience with tasty fresh menus for all the family to enjoy.

Open all day, every day for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, the popular pub on Doncaster Road has had a complete makeover inside and out. It has retained all its charm and character and added those extra comforts which today’s pub visitors and diners expect and deserve.

The revitalised Earl of Strafford has new furniture and fittings inside and out to make the most of its lovely rural setting and views.

It has a prime position on the A630 between Rotherham and Doncaster and with ample parking is a great pub to head out to whatever the day, time or occasion. The central village location means there are fantastic far-reaching views over open fields from the terrace and it’s close to the church and Manor Gardens Nursery.

General Manager at the Earl of Strafford, James Mault is thrilled with the new-look pub. He said: “This is such a special pub, with so much history and charm, and now it is even better! We have carefully balanced all the original features and character of this lovely building with a touch of comfort. Everything here is about quality – great fresh food and drinks with the best service. That goes for everyone including our four-legged friends who will like our very own Dog Bar!”

James added: “Attention to detail has been key in the short month-long closure, so every aspect of the food, drink, service, kitchen, bar and dining (inside and out) are now fantastic. This is a special pub in a wonderful location and it’s ready to serve Hooton Roberts and further afield for many more years to come. It’s an exciting next chapter for this amazing historic building.”

The bar menu has been extended and has an unrivalled choice of real ales, beers, ciders, a fine selection of gins and other artisan spirits. Pubs are the home for cask ales and with the Cask Marque approval, exceptional pints are guaranteed. These are on sale alongside an extensive cocktail menu, barista-style coffees and hot drinks and a good range of low and no alcohol drinks.

James added: “This really is the place for every day of the week now, come in morning, noon or night, with family, friends and neighbours for a drink and a chat or a bite to eat. All day, every day, whatever the reason, this is the pub to choose. Our carefully selected drinks menus have something for everyone from local, national and international producers. It’s all about freshness here and the new menus are really proving popular. The traditional Sunday roasts with all the trimmings and unlimited Yorkie Puds are just so good!”

The new menus cater for all diets and appetite sizes and there is a good choice from pub classics, burgers, steaks and pies, to the more contemporary brunch, tipsy brunch, a children’s menu and light bite dishes.

After years running pubs, James settled in Rotherham 13 years ago. He said: “I have always enjoyed running local community pubs, they are rewarding and I really like the family feel they have. The Earl of Strafford has a great atmosphere and is warm and welcoming. When I am not here you will probably see me with my children and walking my dog, Wesley. We look forward to welcoming everyone to this brilliant family-friendly pub (furry, four-legged friends, as well!).”
