The historic Duke of York in Whitby has reopened in time for Christmas following major works to transform the pub so it can offer the very best in hospitality to residents and tourists alike.

The pub has been serving locals in the coastal Yorkshire town for hundreds of years and has now had a major investment to secure its future.

The bar area has been lovingly refurbished and redecorated throughout. Meanwhile, the number of letting rooms available has grown from three to eight, with each one being completely revamped. And guests will be able to holiday with their canine companions because four of the bedrooms are now pet friendly – as is the rest of the pub.

Opening hours begin at 8am so breakfast can be offered to those staying at the pub and also early morning walk-in guests.

While the Duke of York will attract plenty of tourists and staycationers it is also a warm and welcoming venue for locals.

It has three screens to show major sporting events, along with a full programme of Sky Sports and BT Sport. There will also be events throughout the week including live music, quiz nights, and bingo.

Guests can enjoy food throughout the day with a full menu of pub favourites such as fish and chips, Sunday roasts, and afternoon tea. There is a wide array of drinks including cask beer, wines, a selection of gins and other spirits, along with cocktails.

There’s a familiar face in charge at the pub with Andrew Waller-Stonehouse taking on the role of general manager. He is well-known in Whitby having run the nearby Station Inn for many years. The previous team of staff at The Duke of York are returning along with five new members of staff.

Andrew said: “I am really excited to get the pub open and started. The work has been amazing and it is looking really good – we can’t wait for the world to see it. It has been completely modernised but retained its character.

“It’s a change and a new challenge for me and I am really looking forward to opening the doors to everyone.”

The pub is part of the award-winning Stonegate Group. It invested over £910,000 in The Duke of York so it can bring the best in hospitality to the Whitby community and beyond. The investment has retained the pub’s unique features including the names of all the local fishing boats which were etched on the beams – these have now been re-written on the walls in the pub.

The pub hosted a relaunch party on Friday December 9 which featured live music plus a free drink for the first 100 guests through the doors.

Keep up to date with all the events and offers on the pub’s website and follow on its Facebook page.
