A customer of a pub in Crosby has completed a grueling 24 hours cycle challenge in aid of Variety, the Children’s Charity.

Dave Gordon, whose sister–in–law is pub manager, Karen Gordon, from George pub on Moor Lane, cycled a staggering 250 miles from the pub to Southport and back ten times from 2pm on Saturday 14th June to 2pm on Sunday 15th June, raising £500.

The challenge is part of a nationwide fundraising initiative organized by the pub’s parent company, Stonegate Pub Company for Variety, the Children’s Charity. Each of the 620 pubs from the award-winning Stonegate Pub Company is taking part in Britain’s Biggest Pub Tour (BBPT). As well as hosting fun events at the pubs, across towns and cities from the Isle of Wight to Inverness, a giant BBPT passport will journey 5,555 miles throughout the UK visiting each Stonegate business, by an assortment of unique and entertaining methods of transport.

Commenting on the challenge, Dave Gordon, who lives in Hemel Hempstead but travelled to Crosby for the challenge said, “When Karen first told me about the Great British Pub Tour I was keen to be involved. Last year I cycled from John O’Groats to Lands End for charity so I was definitely up for another challenge. It was hard and there were certainly moments through the night when it was exhausting but knowing that lots of children would benefit hugely from my efforts drove me on. The customers and staff at The George have been fantastically supportive, giving generously in sponsorship.”

The BBPT Pledge Passport will be delivered to The George from Yates’s in Bootle via mobility scooter on Sunday 6th July at 10.30am. The pub will host a family fun day before the pub’s team members and customers will take part in a sponsored tandem bike ride with the BBPT Passport to Grapes on Green Lane in Formby, arriving at midday.

Tim Edwards, Area Manager at Stonegate Pub Company and regional BBPT coordinator said, “Well done to Dave, Karen and the team at the George who have really got behind Britain’s Biggest Pub Tour with bags of enthusiasm and fundraising ideas.”

As part of the fundraising 50p from the sale of special Charity tipples, Strawberry Pimm’s or a pint of specially brewed real ale, The Crawler (Golden Blonde ale 4.1 ABV) will be donated to the Variety, the Children’s Charity.

The passport will continue its tour around the country culminating with a spectacular party at Slug and Lettuce, Tower Bridge on Friday 26 September.
