The historic Griffin in the picturesque village of Godshill is up and running with a new owner at the helm after a significant investment project.

The 200-year-old coaching inn closed in February for a complete refurbishment that has seen the pub sensitively redecorated and redesigned throughout, while retaining the original features and character that makes it such a popular spot for residents and tourists alike.

There’s a new face behind the bar with experienced operator Paul Mulcrone returning to the island to take over the running of the Griffin.

He said: “I’ve worked in hospitality for more than 30 years and I’m as happy as a sand boy to be back on the Isle of Wight. My family are here so it is a homecoming for me. I’m very excited to be at this historic pub which is at the heart of the Godshill community and can’t wait to welcome customers back through the doors.

“We have retained most of the team and created 20 new jobs for people on the Isle of Wight.”

Along with the redesign inside the pub, the outside space has also been given a makeover. The pub has retained its popular hedge maze and has a host of new equipment for the children’s play area.

As well as being family friendly, dog-lover Paul is also keen for customers to bring along their canine friends, who can even enjoy the pub’s menu created especially for dogs.

One thing the team will not be making a dog’s dinner of is its popular Sunday roasts. These will be a headline feature of a menu that includes pub classics. The Griffin stocks a wide array of drinks including national and local cask ales from breweries such as Goddards and Yates, which are both based on the island.

Customers can also enjoy a wide range of entertainment including live acoustic music on Sundays and pub quizzes on Tuesdays.

The pub has reopened and will hold a range of events to celebrate in the next few weeks, including more live entertainment and an Easter egg hunt.

One guest who has not left the building is Jack, the ghost who has resided at The Griffin for more than 150 years.

The Griffin is part of the award-winning Stonegate Group. It has invested a significant figure in the pub so it can bring the best in hospitality to the residents and visitors to Godshill.

Keep up to date with all the events and offers on the pub’s website and Facebook page.
