The Black Horse Hotel at Skipton, boasting almost four hundred years of Yorkshire history, is marking out its future with a £400,000 refurbishment, putting locals of God’s own country right at its heart.

With its picturesque canal-side, historic steps where King Richard III reputedly tethered his horse, and close to Skipton castle, its little wonder The Black Horse is a destination for tourists. But, says owner Stonegate Pub Company, the traditional coaching inn is as important for locals, so from sports to a celebration of the town’s market day, beer from six North Yorkshire breweries, and a Diamond (OAP) club for valued residents, there will be plenty to keep the Britain’s happiest town* happy.

After a month of closure, the pub reopens on Friday 8th June from 5pm with a VIP offer including Prosecco, cask and menu tasters, when the Mayor of Skipton will be joining customers at the revamped pub with its additional seating, homely feel, and nod to the town’s heritage as the Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales. Saturday is host to a party for families, welcoming younger guests and inviting them to experience the refreshed pub from 12-4pm.

“We’ve got a premium look as well as products including 20 gins and six beers, and a whole new entertainment programme,” said manager Julie Joyce. “We’re mindful that the reason tourists have swarmed here for years is to experience the great Yorkshire welcome so by putting locals first, that’s naturally what we’ll offer.”

The building, erected in 1676 and Grade II listed, has a function room for up to 200 hosting traditional soul & swing events as well as being available for hire. Sky sports and Sports Table Service have been brought in ready for the World Cup; traditional pub food ranges from 2-4-1 meals from £9.99 to Pie & Pint night at £5.99; and proving there’s ‘nowt like a proper brew’ – cask ales from Black Sheep, Keighley brewery, and Beer Monkey.

Eight new jobs have also been created as a result of the investment. Other reasons to visit include: Monday traditional board games; Tuesday CAMRA discount and Cask Collector boost; Wednesday market day; Thursday Diamond Club; Friday Kwizzbit; Saturday late DJ; and Sunday Sport (as well as Sunday roast).
