It’s not often you see your bank manager collecting glasses in your local on a Saturday afternoon but that’s exactly what happened at the Owain Glyndwr pub on St John Street in Cardiff last weekend.
Barclays staff offered to lend a hand during the busy period when the RBS Six Nations rugby match, Wales vs Ireland was showing and to fundraise in aid of two charities which are close to the hearts of the team at Barclays, the Elise for Life Appeal and The Christie NHS Trust.
“In just one afternoon we raised £1012 which is incredible, which Barclays have pledged to match,” said Simon Dews of Barclays. “What a generous group of punters at the Owain Glyndwr. After six hours of glass collecting and fundraising we were exhausted but it was well worth it!”, he added.
The team at Barclays choose to fundraise for the Elise of Life Appeal and The Christie NHS Trust after former bank colleague Elise Roberts lost her battle with cancer in 2010. Her colleagues vowed to honour her by continuing her aim to raise £1m for The Christie NHS Trust in Manchester.
“We’re expecting the pub to be busy during the Six Nations matches over the next few weeks as we have some of the best sports viewing facilities of any pub in Cardiff, so we were more than happy when Barclays asked if they could fundraise for the Elise for Life Appeal and The Christie NHS Trust on Welsh match days,” said Mark Falzon, Owain Glyndwr’s General Manager. “Having a few extra pairs of hands is certainly welcome too.”
