A wrought iron fire pit, heated beach huts, pretty pergola; twinkling lit with comfy sofas and planting might sound like a fairy-tale magical garden except it’s part of a very real £300,000 investment that’s created Yorkshire’s best pub garden.
The Old Halfway House, between the vibrant towns of Horbury and Ossett, has been a gem of local Yorkshire life since the 18thcentury, and now the stone-built landmark has had a sympathetic renovation which wowed locals on Friday 19thMay complete with quintessentially English violinist and later, acoustic performances.
The modernised yet homely warmth of the pub is perfect for it’s seasonal menu inspired by the best of British and Mediterranean whilst the ultra-charming garden really has created a prime destination for families inclusive of brilliant hampers of summer food and wine, smart Wi-Fi, bouncy castle and garden board games.
“The garden is absolutely amazing,” said manager of four years Claire Hidle. “We’ve created massive 145 covers with beach huts, sofas, and structures where friends can cuddle up, toast marshmallows on the huge fire pit and enjoy all year round.”
There will also be a huge crew of outdoor staff offering table service, a team that has grown by ten to cope with the expected demand of the landscaped masterpiece.
The Old Halfway House is definitely appealing to families. After the grand opening evening, Saturday 20thMay will see a family focus inviting the young and old to help create the ‘Memory Tree’ which will be hung in the pub whilst finger painting, arts and crafts, face painting and a balloon modeller will be available throughout the afternoon.
“Saturday is about our message to encourage families to spend time together,” added Claire. “We’re starting with breakfasts from 9am right through to Sunday lunch. We’re creating an environment that says ‘come on, appreciate family time’.”
The beer has had an overhaul with new craft beers from Samuel Adams and Camden whilst the reputation for local real ales continues with hand pulls from Leeds, Barnsley and of course Ossett; CAMRA members also get 20% discount on pints.
There’s a feel of sunshine in the food: Potted Crab on a layer of avocado; Jerk Chicken Skewers with mango & pineapple salsa; West Country Ham & Pea Terrine with Ploughman’s pickle; and in the era of social sharing, on trend Antipasti with Mediterranean accompaniments. A premium range of Ploughman’s and Superfood Salad, BBQ style grills and desserts like Elderflower Syllabub will fulfil most appetites.
Other many reasons to visit include; Tuesday 25% discount for over 65’s; Wednesday Burger night; Thursday grill night; Friday Fizz night; and Sunday Roast. £5 lunches also run Tuesday to Friday 12-5pm; quiz nights Tuesday and Thursday.
