THE CLOSURE OF AN IRISH BAR IS ALREADY FORGOTTEN AS OWNERS REVEALED the £400,000 transformation of Bristol’s old Molloys to create a contemporary, independent and cool bar called The Birkett Tap, along with six new jobs.
The huge investment, its name a nod to the building’s original architect, introduces the city’s biggest range of twenty craft beers and ciders, a completely new menu of pizza and tapas, and an atmosphere that oozes ‘we love fun’.
Industrialised, reclaimed and quirky with neon and abstract lighting, it’s geared up for after work drinks with 2-FOR-1 cocktails 5-8pm Monday – Friday, a break from work with brunch, parties with pizza and prosecco, or a special night out with something going on every night from PS4 FIFA events to funk nights and the biggest live sports atmosphere in town.
Opening its doors on Saturday 28th April, a launch event on Friday 4th May will showcase what Bristolians can expect from the new crafty bar. Samples of signature sourdough pizzas, Bristol Beer Factory craft beers, craft cider, and of course fizz will all be on hand, as duelling pianists ‘Pianos on Fire’ and their accompanying band fulfill The Birkett Tap’s love of music.
“We’re transforming into a modern bar for city slickers, hipsters, students, and party lovers to enjoy,” said general manager Nick Tyrell. “We’re set for an epic first night going into the bank holiday weekend and look forward to showing off our unique bar.”
Ping pong tables, a pool table and NFL bring a slightly different edge to a core sports offer of eight screens and two projectors airing BT and Sky Sports. There’s even Sports Table Service (yes, beer brought to the table) meaning no score is ever missed.
Twenty craft and cask beers is an unmistakable highlight, the neon lit back wall of taps showing off, among others, Bristol Beer Factory, Hop House 13, Longhorn IPA and Camden Hells. Cocktails from the sweetness of Pornstar Martini to the trend of tin can cocktails, comparable in range only to the fifteen gins and spirits emporium where even Tequila is sipped not shot.
Sourdough pizzas, tempting tapas sharers and an enviable line up of desserts make the edgy menu inclusive for the veggie, trendsetter, and crav-able burger lover. The Japanese Wagyu Beef Burger ticks all boxes with oozing molten cheese sauce, wrapped for extra juice and succulence.
Other week long reasons to visit include Meat Free Monday; Retro games and film Tuesday; Wednesday Sticky Wings 10 for £3; Thursday 2- FOR-1 Pizza and quiz night; Fizz and TFI (Thank Funk It’s)! Friday; Saturday resident DJ party; and Sundays are for Roast and Craft Club 2 for £5 (from 5pm).
