Last week saw hundreds of members of the Bushey community rally together in the ‘Bushey Bake Off’. More than 300 households took part in the initiative that was organised by local couple Laura and Spencer Bloomberg – a far cry from Spencer’s day job in the finance department at Stonegate Pub Company.
Over the course of the day more than 7,000 biscuits, 1,250 cupcakes and 50 cakes were delivered to the couples socially distant, designated drop off point. The two then repackaged everything for delivery to 15 hospitals in the area, as well as 12 local charities, including hospices, care homes, children’s homes and organisations that support the homeless.
The project was organised in conjunction with ‘You Donate, We Deliver’, which was started by the Bloomberg’s friends Katie Commissar and Sarah Laster, to help safely deliver essential items, like homecooked meals and PPE to NHS staff on the frontline. Laura and Spencer already arrange 150 meals a week for the scheme, as well as shopping regularly for their elderly neighbours.
Spencer said: “Laura and I had been wondering for some time as to how best to help our frontline NHS staff, and when Laura landed on the idea of the ‘Bushey Bake Off’ it snowballed so quickly, we had everything organised in only a week!
“We reached out to local schools, who let parents know, as well as on various local Facebook groups, and before we knew it, we had more than 300 members of the community committed to helping out. So many people are desperate to help and to show their appreciation to key workers – it really seemed the perfect way to engage our local community. We’re so touched by everyone’s generosity; it has been a very humbling experience.”
Spencer and Laura continue to support the NHS through ‘You Donate, We Deliver’ who are constantly looking for volunteers to assist in the South Herts area. To join the effort, find them on Facebook via:http://www.facebook.com/groups/509755896261351/
