Local community hub, the Corner Pin in Barnsley, has rallied their local community and raised an incredible £12,000 for nationwide charity Epilepsy Society through a number of fundraisers since the beginning of the year. Most recently, the pub team was joined by a 23-strong group of customers and members of the community for a group sky dive on Sunday 16th June to raise much needed funds for the brilliant cause.
Amongst some of their key fundraisers was an event in March that saw the pub raise £1,100 for Epilepsy Society. This family fun day was complete with a tombola raffle with signed football shirts and dart boards amongst the exciting prizes as well as a body waxing fundraiser for brave participants. Following the success of the event, Corner Pin will be hosting another entertaining fundraising day on 11th October. The pub has also been actively fundraising and advertising their upcoming challenges and events within the venue through collection buckets which have performed exceptionally well.
Operator of the Corner Pin, Jyneen Haughie, who has led the organisation of many of the pub’s charity initiatives commented: “Since losing my sister to an epilepsy related condition, supporting Epilepsy Society has been hugely important to me. I am consistently amazed by how the Corner Pin pub community support and rally around us and the cause that is so close to our hearts. Our regulars are incredible, and we really could not have raised £12,000 without them. A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us, we’ve got plenty more fundraisers lined up, pop in to the Corner Pin to find out more!”
Epilepsy Society are the only charity in the UK dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by epilepsy through world-leading research, advocacy and care. The charity was first launched in 1892 by a group of London philanthropists and medics who wanted to establish a ‘colony’ for people with epilepsy who were capable of work but couldn’t find employment due to their condition and the prevailing social attitudes of the time. Nowadays, Epilepsy Society works to understand the causes of epilepsy in individuals and strives to identify the best therapy and make this expertise widely available.
The Corner Pin originally hoped to raise £5,000 over the course of the year for the worthy cause, however after accomplishing this goal by April 2024, the pub team set their sights on achieving £10,000 for the charity, which they have now smashed in just a short period of time.
As a Craft Union venue, Corner Pin and their fundraising efforts are part of the group’s wider “Make it a Million” campaign that aims to raise £1 million across all Craft Union sites to triumph the incredible £800,000 they collectively raised last year. Community is at the heart of Craft Union’s message and the power of community is evident through the fantastic work of local pubs such as Barnsley’s Corner Pin.
