The Cother Arms, formally known as The Wishing Well, on Saint Albans Road has opened following a six-figure investment.
Receiving a complete transformation in addition to a name change, the venue’s new look interior sees its seating areas refurbished giving a new lease of life to the pub with a new lighter and more open look and feel.
With a number of large TVs throughout all areas of the pub, there’s no better place in town to catch all of the best sporting action live with your friends and family, as Cother Arms enjoys the start of the new football season, with local favourites Watford kicking off their Championship campaign with a win. Also entertaining guests will be the venue’s freshly updated darts area, with an illuminated dartboard creating the perfect opportunity for a little competition between friends. This is alongside the pool table area which remains a focal point of the sporting activities on offer.
The renaming of the pub comes from Watford FC’s Cother Brothers, Edwin and John, who were the club’s first black players back in 1898, both true local legends. The rapid expansion of London in recent years has seen the city’s cosmopolitan flavour spill over and mix with Watford’s old heritage, turning a former English market settlement into one of the most culturally complex towns in Hertfordshire. It truly is a small town with a big city feel.
The old Wishing Well has been part of the St Albans Road since the early start of 2000, as a traditional Irish pub.
The Cother Arms is open everyday from 12pm so it’s the perfect venue to pop in and have a refreshing drink this summer. The bar stocks quality beers, wines and spirits with well-known local, national and international names. The drinks menu also feature a good choice of interesting low and no-alcohol drinks too.
The pub is Operated by Becca, who has been looking after the day-to-day running of the venue since 2019. She is a true local, having grown up in Watford. With her family running pubs in the area all of her life, she knows exactly what it takes to be the perfect host to her guests.
Speaking on the reopening, Operator at the Cother Arms, Becca Harrington said: “It’s a great feeling to welcome guests back to the pub once again after the exciting refurbishment. I’m thrilled and very proud to oversee this fantastic local pub through its redevelopment, I really couldn’t be more pleased with how it has turned out. We’ve had a great response from our regulars on the new appearance and we’ve been as busy as ever since reopening the doors and celebrating an amazing feat for England’s Women Football team. I have a real passion for both the local people of Watford and pubs, so to be able to see this place busy again is fantastic.”
The Cother Arms in Watford is part of the award-winning Craft Union Pub Company, who were named the Best Community Operator at the 2022 Publican Awards.
