This is the time to make the most of the great British pub beer garden season and there are few to rival the Walnut Tree in Heworth village as it shows off its brand-new look, both inside and out. The pub reopens this week [Thursday 1 June] following a £355,000 investment.
The large garden at the popular neighbourhood pub has had a spring makeover so it’s even more comfortable and delightful for customers wanting to sit back and enjoy an alfresco pint, a spritz, cocktail or glass of wine with friends and family.
New outside lighting, greenery and colourful plants, candles and cosy blankets (just in case the temperature drops) have been added as part of a £355,000 refurbishment of the pub by the award-winning Stonegate Group. There is now a lighter and brighter feel to the inside too alongside extra soft furnishings to complete the Walnut Tree’s new 2022 look. The atmosphere and ambiance inside complement the warm welcome and friendly service as customers enjoy the newly-opened local again.
It is open and serving drinks, snacks and main meals everyday. The new breakfast menus are anticipated to be a hit alongside some great lunch offers, or pick from the pub classics including pies and burgers and sharing dishes such as tasty wings. All diets can be catered for and there are dishes for big and smaller appetites.
The bar has a wide range of local, national and international beers, wines and spirits as well as an exciting cocktail menu and good selection of low and no alcohol drinks. Barista-style coffees, teas and hot drinks are available throughout the day and night.
There’s a busy calendar of entertainment and events to add to the pub’s all-round appeal and create a buzzing atmosphere for all ages. Catch TV sports match action in the bar or out in the garden, have a game of darts, take part in quiz nights or keep an eye out for live music in the coming weeks and months.
“It’s been a busy time making sure we have everything just right,” says General Manager Hayley Walker, “but it’s so worth it. It’s so good to be open again. This pub is such a part of Heworth and York and now it’s even better than it was before. This really is the time of year to make the most of our wonderful beer garden. It’s great to see people back in, regular faces and newcomers who are enjoying the new look and the new food and drink menus. It’s good to serve quality food and drinks without the eyewatering prices. This really is a local’s pub, everyone is welcome, whether you want to watch a match with friends, have a quiet drink, start the day with a full English, relax with an drink after work or tuck into a traditional Sunday lunch with all the trimmings. We are here everyday, come in and let us look after you!”
The Walnut Tree has a rather unusual history as it was originally built as a private residence, owned by the Evans, owners of the launderette on the corner of Dales Lane. It only opened as a pub when the licence was transferred from the village’s original pub, The Britannia, which used to be opposite the Walnut Tree.
Commenting on the refurbishment, Hayley said: “The Walnut Tree has a great future ahead now. We really are at the heart of the community and the place where people meet up from morning to night and enjoy the best pub and beer garden in the area.”
