Amy Wainscott, the furloughed General Manager of the Crafty Dragon, on the High Street in Wrexham, has raised nearly £3000 for the Still Birth and Neo-Natal Death charity, Sands, far outstripping her goal of £500.

Amy has committed to doing a skydive as part of the fundraising effort that is due to take place on Saturday 27 June, in tandem with other Sands supporters across the country. To ensure all of the donations pledged to her cause go straight to the charity, Amy has covered the cost of the skydive herself.

Sands is dedicated to reducing the number of babies dying and improving the care and support for anyone affected by the death of a baby. The charity also aims to raise awareness of the issues surrounding stillbirth and neonatal death and to reduce the taboo associated with those deaths, as well as ensuring every hospital in the UK is equipped with the appropriate facilities to support bereaved parents.

By the end of 2020 Sands aims to have both a bereavement lead and at least one bereavement suite in every trust or health board in the UK.

Amy said: “I am so proud to have raised such an amazing amount of money for such an important cause – and to have done it while we’ve been in lockdown is testament to the generosity of everyone who has got involved. I want to thank each and every one of you.

“The support that Sands offers, touched me personally earlier this year and I can say from my experience that I couldn’t have done it without them. In a period of so much grief, to have a charity on hand providing all the information you need, is invaluable, and on top of that the team at Chester Hospital was just amazing. My mid-wife Lesley was my rock throughout my time there, and I’m so pleased to see she has now become the hospitals dedicated bereavement mid-wife.

“As much as this has been about raising money for an amazing cause, I also wanted to help encourage other women to have the confidence to feel like they can talk openly about the loss of a baby at any stage of pregnancy or life. It’s so important to make sure women know that it’s not their fault and that there are people who want to listen and help them through such a difficult time.”

Although Amy’s skydive is still due to take place at the end of June, Whitchurch Airfield are dedicated to ensuring the safety of all its staff and skydivers and will postpone her jump if necessary.
