Darts legend Bobby George helped Stephen Merrick and the team at the Goose in Wood Green officially celebrate their reopening, following a 10 day closure and an investment of £200,000.
Stephen Merrick, Manager of The Goose said: “Our opening party was just fantastic and our customers were queuing up to play up with Bobby and of course, to see the changes that we’ve made to the pub and they weren’t disappointed on either count.
“Bobby was an absolute star, taking time to chat to the customers. Usually darts players take part in 3 or 4 games and do a little demonstration match but such was the demand from our customers, he very generously played about 17 games – he did look shattered afterwards!
“We got a great mix of customers in last night; we had our regulars who were pleased that their local was open again along with a number students who also popped in to see how the pub looked. It was nice to welcome a range of ages so hopefully that will continue. The pub does look great and the team are really pleased with our new look.”
The Goose, which is owned by the Stonegate Pub Company, closed after trading on Sunday 15th April to make way for the refurbishment which has capitalised on the heritage of the Victorian building and enhanced one of Wood Green’s best known landmarks.
The investment has seen the courtyard area at the back of the pub extended to encompass new garden furniture, new plants, lighting and of course, the obligatory giant umbrellas to protect customers from the British weather! At the front of the building, new outdoor tables and chairs have also be introduced, complete with cafe-style screens.
Inside the pub, the mahogany panelling and woodwork has been re-polished and revived to bring it back to its former glory, a mix of new furniture combining poseur tables and stools with softer seating has also be introduced as part of the refurbishment along with a new colour scheme.
To cater for customer demand, the Goose has also extended its real ale offer from three to five hand pumps and is currently listing the following beers; Marston’s IPA, Bombardier, Doom Bar, London Pride and Timothy Taylor’s Landlord. Real ale enthusiasts will like the new loyalty scheme too, as, for every 7th pint purchased the 8th will be free. CAMRA members will also receive a 10% discount on real ale.
