Two security staff working on the door of the Two Brewers in Clapham during a horrific homophobic attack that shocked the nation in August 2023 have been awarded with a Star Award from the National Pubwatch.

On the 13th of August, a man attacked two homosexual men with a knife while they were outside popular LGBTQIA+ venue, the Two Brewers in Clapham.

The attacker lunged over the smoking area barriers and injured both men, with both obtaining head injuries and requiring hospital treatment.

Both men managed to escape from the attacker, running into the venue while door security, Itua Moses and Wyn Mowatt, acted quickly to rush the victims and all guests from the smoking area into the venue.

Once everyone was inside the venue, Moses and Mowatt bolted the doors to ensure the safety of everyone inside. Their quick thinking and bravery in initiating an invacuation meant the attacker could not harm anyone else, as they remained outside while both men tended to the injured victims.

Moses and Mowatt calmly provided vital first aid, staying with the victims until ambulances arrived to take them to the hospital, going above and beyond their duties to protect and reassure everyone in the venue during the terrifying ordeal.

The guests, staff, and police all could not speak more highly of the men’s actions, with the duo receiving the Star Award by Paul Wotton from the National Pubwatch during a recent ceremony at the Two Brewers in Clapham.

Thankfully, both victims recovered from their injuries with the attack sending shockwaves throughout the LGBTQIA+ community, while Moses and Mowatt’s bravery also displayed just how important door staff are in ensuring everyone’s safety on a night out.

Jimmy Smith, General Manager of the Two Brewers, said: “I’m thrilled to see both men’s actions recognised by the National Pubwatch. Their quick thinking and bravery will have helped potentially save lives and prevent further injuries, and I can’t thank the two men enough for what they did.

“The police and members of the public all highly commended Moses and Mowatt’s actions as they both went above and beyond to make guests feel safe in a dangerous situation, ensuring the attacker could not hurt anyone else in our bar.

“At the Two Brewers, we pride ourselves on being an inclusive environment and making our guests feel safe, with Moses and Mowatt being the best example of how seriously we take our guests’ safety at Stonegate Group.”
