The Spectre on Cheltenham’s High Street gave sports lovers a treat on a huge sporting Easter weekend, with a Good Friday reopening after a £170,000 refurbishment bringing high-tech viewing, breakfast opening hours, live music, and a beer festival to boot.
For a developing Cheltenham, the pub, named after the first Cheltenham Gold Cup winner of 1819, keeps its place as the number one sports viewing venue with three impressive drop down screens and enhanced quality HD TVs throughout, creating the best stadium effect outside of the real thing.
“We broke record sales during this year’s Cheltenham Festival and with the expanding developments on the High Street, we wanted to keep ahead of ourselves with the ultimate in sports viewing whilst also offering appeal to passing daytime shoppers and workers,” said manager Alun Griffiths.
After a successful Friday opening, premier league football, rugby and the live Anthony Joshua fight kicked the refreshed pub off to a great start with the Spectre’s in-house DJ entertaining a jam-packed venue until the early hours.
With an extra ten staff on board, and now open from 8am every day, it’s clear The Spectre isn’t a one trick ‘sporting’ pony though with its new cream and pastel frontage, female friendly and up-to-date décor. A brand new modern glass back bar boasts a range of cocktails including party bowls at a reasonable £9.99, fourteen gins, craft beers Punk IPA and Hop House 13, and six real ales including ‘The Spectre’ house beer and regular local ales from the likes of Battledown, North Cotswold and Gloucestershire breweries.
During the next six weeks, The Spectre’s beer festival offers over one hundred beers and with most new real ale drinkers trying their first pint at a beer festival, what better an idea than to make available three thirds to try; there’s also ‘buy eight pints, get one free’ (not in one sitting)!
Morning turns to night with Big Night Outs until 3am at the weekend with live music and DJ Friday and Saturdays. Monday is also a chance for locals to show their talents on Open Mic Night; Thursday is for students; and Super Sunday has the famous Sunday roast with sports.
Great value is still key for the food menu with two meals at £10.99 such as Fish & Chips and Beef & Ale Pie, all day every day. Burgers from Classic Beef to Three-way Chicken, Grills and Build-your-own Planks for the ultimate socialites couldn’t get more ‘proper pub’.
