News of the closure of Walkabout Exeter yesterday (9th October) might have surprised some but owners Stonegate Pub Company have revealed their long planned behind the scenes scheme to invest a massive £450,000 into the property delivering a next generation pub to the city.
New pub the ‘Exonian’ will launch in the middle of November after the transformational spend that will create an additional ten jobs in addition to existing staff.
Stonegate Pub Company, the UK’s largest independent pub company, bought the Walkabout brand nine months ago, converting some of their original pubs to the brand, and others to different formats.
Chief Executive Simon Longbottom said: “With such vast success in both High Street and traditional pubs, we have fantastic opportunity to review the marketplace in which our premises sit, and where a different format is best for the area, local economy and of course the community, we have the flexibility and experience to make that change to deliver a better venue.
“The Exonian is in a fantastically vibrant city and will be a better amenity, day to night offer geared at tourists, locals and students, and a highly social environment to work or relax before partying in the evening. We’re thrilled and passionate about the transformation, so much so we are delighted to invest such a significant sum into the city.”
Whilst not giving away all the secrets, live music is promised alongside craft beer, gin sensations, and tin can cocktails whilst refuelling on grazing or hearty food from wings and nachos to ribs and eleven varieties of tasty burgers, at a price to suit every budget.
Free wi-fi, printing facilities and more places to recharge electronics than the average workplace are sure to make the Exonian an interesting work space . Live sports, customer loyalty scheme, library of board games, and a calendar of live entertainment are also on the agenda.
Manager Esther Hollick added: “We’ve got a big party weekend coming up to see goodbye in style to Walkabout and then we’ve got a busy few weeks getting ready for what is going to be the biggest and best change Exeter has seen in a long time.”
