Chester’s Latin inspired Fiesta Havana bar has been shortlisted for a national award in recognition of its worldwide collection of premium spirits and 70-strong menu of authentic cocktails, designed by its own mixology experts in the Havana bar itself.

Boasting a sixty-year legacy, Fiesta Havana beat dozens of worthy entrants from bars across the UK to earn a place in the finals of this year’s John Smith’s Great British Pub Awards that could see it crowned ‘Best Spirits Pub’.

It’s a bar with a heritage that has stood the test of time. Unlike bars that have only recently cashed in on the recent resurgence of the premium drink, its spirits range has forever driven a phenomenal two-thirds of its sales. Its elite knowledge of worldwide spirits and trends, passion, and product range was recognised by judges, alongside the innovative ways it helps customers experience new tastes.

As its name suggests, the ultra stylish and cool bar, updated with a £145,000 refurbishment last year, also offers Chester its own taste of Cuba, and with a Hola or Buenos noches, most things relate to its Latino roots. It boasts over 160 core, premium and guest spirits on the bar at any one time, with opportunities to experience new tastes with events such as cocktail master classes and Thursday ‘Rumfest’, celebrating the very spirit that made Cuba famous.

“Our range comes from thirty countries, and wherever we can, we hunt for a spirit that comes from Latin America, even if that might not be where the spirit first became famous,” explains manager Daniel Ellis, who joined Havana fifteen years ago.

“We keep our cocktail range in particular as innovative as possible with world-class mixologists developing our cocktail menu every six months to keep it interesting and fresh.

“For us, it’s about bringing emerging products to the market to give customers a new experience. We are to spirits what sommeliers are to wine, gastronomists to food, and cicerones to beer.”

Served with theatre and the odd cha cha cha, Fiesta Havana’s party atmosphere will definitely stand it in good stead for the final round of judging that hopes to see Chester recognised for its diverse bars amongst pre-eminent cities like London and Manchester.

Ed Bedington, organiser of the John Smith’s Great British Pub Awards, said: “These awards are the most rigorous of their kind for the pub sector and it’s a real achievement to make it this far into the competition.”

The judging process is three-rounds and includes a visit by the judges as part of the final process. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on September 6.

Fiesta Havana is one of just five finalists in the John Smith’s Great British Pub Awards 2018’s ‘Best Spirits Bar/Pub’ category.
