The Howgait, on St James’s Road in Glasgow, is hosting a Family Fun Day in aid of Cancer Research on Saturday 28th July.

Holding Manager, Jamie Marshall, has organised a Bingo competition, a pool tournament and a quiz, which will run throughout the day, as well as garden games for children, complete with a waterslide. Customers will be asked to donate an optional, small entrance fee on the day which will go straight to the charity. The pool tournament is £10 to enter and is already proving to be the big attraction of the day, with 32 people signed up to take part.

The event comes as part of Jamie’s participation in the ‘Accelerator Programme’, a training course run by managing operator, Stonegate Pub Company, which includes a practical component, organising and producing a fundraiser for a chosen charity.

The programme is designed to give employees the tools to bridge the gap between Deputy Manager and General Manager, through education and dynamic group learning. The course aims to build the participant’s confidence, encourage continued independent learning and help them to work together effectively as team.

Jamie, who has been the Holding Manager of the Howgait for the last five months, is now one of only nine Accelerator participants who will progress straight into a management position after graduation.

“The Howgait is a really community-centric pub, so I decided on an event that everyone can enjoy,” said Jamie. “Pool is very popular in the pub, with some friendly competition always going on – so what better way to find a definitive Howgait Champ, than with a tournament!

“All our customers are enthusiastic about raising money for Cancer Research too. I think cancer is a disease that has touched everyone in one way or another, so raising money for a charity that fights it, is something we can all get behind.

“I’m going to be running a half marathon to help bolster funds too, as well as offering myself up as target practice during our Fun Day. I’ll be giving customers the chance to ‘egg me’ for a small donation – I’m just hoping I haven’t upset anyone I don’t know about!”

The Accelerator Programme in now in its 20th graduation cycle and has seen 337 Deputy Managers complete the course, raising over £200,000 for UK Charities between them.
