The Cribbar, on Gover Lane in Newquay, is hosting a charity family fun weekend to support both Mind, the mental health charity, and the National Autistic Society. Festivities will kick off at 7pm on Saturday 26th October, when the pub welcomes ‘Break Out Voices’, a community choir from Bristol.
Break Out Voices will perform for two sets of 45 minutes, showcasing their a capella vocals, beatboxing skills and ‘noise making’, creating a sound they describe more as a vocal band, rather than a traditional choir. Entrance is free, but the team at the Cribbar will be on hand to accept any donations customers would like to contribute towards the charities.
Sunday 27th October will then see the Cribbar, which is already kitted out with Halloween decorations, welcome the Newquay community to its spook-tastic Family Fun Day and Creepy Crawly Monster Ball Disco. The day will start at 11am with some creepy crafts and sensory play, as well as a face painting station for children to complete their outfits ahead of the disco running from 3pm – 5pm. The Cribbar team will be on the look-out for the scariest dressed boy and girl, as well as the freakiest family, throughout the day, each of whom will receive prizes for their spooky attire.
To finish off the day, there will be a quiz hosted by popular quiz master, John London, at 8pm, followed by a round of ‘Play Your Cards Right’, with a take-home jackpot of £150 for one lucky winner. There is no charge to take part, but donations to Mind and the National Autistic Society are welcome. Throughout the weekend there will also be raffle tickets on sale for the chance to win a range of exciting prizes, from tickets to Blue Reef Aquarium, to vouchers for local restaurants as well as some generous donations from Heineken.
Martin Nile, Deputy Manager of the Cribbar, alongside his wife Ciara, is the brains behind the weekend’s activities, he said of the intiative: “Mind and the National Autistic Society are two charities incredibly close to my heart. So, to be able to run a whole weekend to help support them, as well as raising awareness of both mental health issues and autism, is just fantastic. We’ve got some great things happening over the weekend too – particularly the performance from Break Out Voices, I’m told they are amazing!
“I have four children, one of whom has just been diagnosed with autism, so my family and I are also planning a sponsored walk around Newquay to help support the cause. We want to shine a light on some of the other, less talked about symptoms of autism, like, for example, struggles with weight gain that can affect some suffers. That’s why we want to get talking, and walking, about the subject as much as we can in the coming weeks.”
The event comes as part of Martin’s participation in Stonegate Pub Company’s ‘Accelerator Programme’. The course is part of its award-winning development programme, designed to give staff the skills and knowledge they need to succeed and proceed within the company.
