Wolverhampton’s Hogshead has been voted one of the best beer bars in the country, with its spectacular range of craft, cask and premium beers supplied by brewers from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

General Manager of the pub, Nigel Moore, was delighted to be told that the Hogshead, which is owned by Stonegate Pub Company, had been named a finalist in the prestigious John Smith’s Great British Pub Awards.

“It’s a huge honour to be recognised in these very prestigious awards. We put our hearts and souls into what we do here and to be recognised as being one of the best beer pubs in the country is fantastic,” said Nigel, explaining that the Hogshead has its finger on the pulse of the modern beer movement. “We promote new flavours, brands and the latest innovations to beer lovers, allowing them to discover a new beer that is usually only seen in a big city, here, in the heart of Wolverhampton.”

The Hogshead has established such a strong reputation for its huge range of exceptional quality beers, that specialist brewers even give it access to their small-batch and elite beers, such as BrewDog’s Tokyo, the ‘intergalactic stout’, sold in one-third of a pint measures only!

Craft beers from Tiny Rebel, Fierce Beer and Electric Bear join the better-known local brands, Holden’s Golden Glow, Enville Ale, Salopian Lemon Dream, Wye Valley Butty Bach regularly on the bar. Plus there’s the big name, pub favourites always on tap, including Carling, Peroni and Estrella.

Weekly ‘Tap Takeovers’, where one brand takes over three to five pumps on the bar, and monthly ‘Meet the Brewer’ events, create interest and attract everyone from the novice to beer aficionados.

Barstaff are highly trained beer enthusiasts too, and happily chat to customers about beer styles and the latest brews, making recommendations if required.

“Everyone who enjoys a great glass of beer should come along and see what we do here. There’s always something going on, with new and interesting guest, craft and cask products joining the line-up every week,” said Nigel, adding that alongside the impressive beer range, the pub offers Sky Sports and great food – Tapas, pizza, burgers and burritos and favourite pub classics –– all made from fresh ingredients by a passionate kitchen team. There’s also a great selection of cocktails, shots, spirits, mixers and wine, for those who prefer something other than beer.

Ed Bedington, organiser of the John Smith’s Great British Pub Awards, said: “These awards are the most rigorous of their kind for the pub sector and it’s a real achievement to make it this far into the competition.”

The judging process is three-rounds and includes a visit by the judges as part of the final process. The winner will be announced at an award’s ceremony at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on September 6.

Hogshead, which is one of six finalists in the John Smith’s Great British Pub Awards 2018’s ‘Best Beer Bar/Pub’ category, holds the Cask Marque’s 5* Cellar Award, for its exceptional cellar and beer quality, and is listed in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide.
