Newbury MP Rt Hon Richard Benyon, took time out to visit Newbury’s new Australian-themed Walkabout on Friday (6th April) to see behind the scenes of the pub purchased from Wetherspoon by Stonegate Pub Company, refurbished at a cost of £520,000 and creating fifteen new jobs last month.
The site underwent a huge transformation boasting fifteen screens for die-hard sports fans, along with the best of late-night offerings in town. Inspired by the spirit of modern-day Australia, the food menu includes the new Balls Out Burger and the Katsu Curry Parmi along with a delectable range of sharing dishes and party platters. Craft beers, wines, and mouth-watering Aussie Twist cocktails in cans are all on offer too.
The local MP was introduced to the front and back of house team, learning of Stonegate’s apprenticeships and careers in management, highlighting the important role pubs and bars play in community and local economy.
Mr Benyon commented: “The bar looks fantastic and it’s great to see Walkabout’s training programmes providing not just job opportunities for Newbury, but real career paths. Well run bars are important for local economy and it was encouraging to hear of the work Walkabout are doing with Pubwatch, the Business Improvement District and local charities.”
Pub manager Annie Partington said: “We were delighted that Richard came to meet the team and see our brand-new bar. The little bit of the outback we’ve brought to Newbury has gone down a storm really lifting the day and night-time economy! “

This investment forms part of our annual £50 Million spend developing our pubs across the country providing enhanced community facilities, creating jobs and careers for people of all ages. Hospitality is an important business sector generating significant income for government and we are pleased that our local MP recognises the importance of British pubs and bars.”
