A famous Newcastle venue has been given a stunning new look as it returns to its original name.

The Lowther on Newgate Street has gone through several guises over the years, including Babylon, Boom Bar and, most recently, Retro.

It is now returning to its roots by going back to its original name – it was last known as The Lowther in 1998 – and offering the very best in hospitality to residents as well as tourists visiting the revitalised Bigg Market area.

Owners, Craft Union have invested more than £300,000 in major works at the site which have involved a complete revamp with a new bar, flooring, design, lighting, furniture, and fittings. There is also a new pool table and illuminated darts board for customers to enjoy.

There’s a new boss at the helm too with local operator Nick Smith taking over the site. Nick also runs the Craft Union’s Rose & Crown, also in Newgate Street.

He said: “The site has been absolutely gutted so it is going to be a great new look and atmosphere for everyone to enjoy at the Lowther.”

The Lowther opened its doors on February 20th, just in time for a huge date for Newcastle United fans as the high-flying Magpies took on Manchester United in the Carabao Cup Final on Sunday February 26th.

Nick continued: “It was a huge day for us. The team is doing so well and the investment has had really positive impact on trade.”

With eight new HD TV screens, including one measuring 75ins, football fans will not miss a kick at The Lowther. As well as Newcastle fixtures, the addition of Sky Sports and BT Sport means fans can catch all the best in live football, boxing, rugby, racing and much more.

While live sport will play an important role in the offer, there will be loads more entertainment with quiz nights, student nights and live DJs specialising in 90s, noughties and classic house nights.

Nick added: “We expect to have our strong regular and local trade and at the weekends there are more tourists coming to enjoy a night out in an area that has got a new lease of life.”

The pub is part of the award-winning Craft Union Pub Company, who were named the Best Community Operator at the 2022 Publican Awards.
