An aura of good fortune has hit Friar Street as owners of the Monk’s Retreat reveal a £400,000 renovation just nine months after taking over.
Stonegate Pub Company delighted pub worshippers in November last year saving the popular venue from fate and installing traditional values of the British pub. Now, a new twist has set a fresh destiny after the restoration with an enormous range of cask and craft beer, sport and entertainment.
Saturday 19th August saw the big reveal, billed to impress Reading with a transformation of contemporary design whilst the offer leaves no doubt this is a proper pub with over 13 choices of beer, hi-tech sports viewing, and live music from local band until 1am.
Two big HD screens and custom-made booths with fixed TVs airing Sky and BT Sports so Boxing, Horseracing and Football fan can all enjoy their favourite events with the added comfort of table service during big games.
“We’re making a great community pub even better after listening to our customers for the past few months. They like the traditional concept, but relished a much better environment,” said General Manger Chris Wiggett.
“We’re looking forward to experimenting with different ales and craft beers, regulars suggestions all welcome! The aim is to try as many different brews as possible in the next year – so watch this space!”
With ten hand pulls and thirteen craft beers lining the bar it really is a taste sensation for the beer aficionado and experimentalist. Brewers Tribute and Lilley’s craft cider are already lined up for tasting evenings, so beer lovers can expect star treatment. Craft beer embraces latest trends, pouring out everything from Camden IPA to Red Pony, Punk IPA, Meantime and Adnam’s Mosaic.
The student hub will return with live entertainment from local bands on the weekends until 1am, party bowls like Mali Woo and Tutti Frutti back on the menu, and 241 cocktails all day everyday the perfect solution to week night socials and weekend soirees.
The aptly named ‘Kings Feast’ menu boasts over 100 combinations of dishes, ranging from all day traditional English breakfast, to grills, a range of burgers, lighter summer salads and vegetarian options including the vegetarian panang curry.
The King’s feast burger is set to cause as stir with four 6oz beef burgers, cheese, bacon, chicken schnitzel, chorizo, onion rings and double chips. There are also jumbo pie platters, the sausage and mash mountain and chef’s choice planks including Mexican- topped twisters, tacos with chicken and chorizo, mini nachos, meatballs and garlic bread.
It really is a welcome for customers of all tastes with only one customer remaining barred – the hanging monk statue auctioned off during the refurbishment closure raising £1,040 for Noah’s ark Children’s Hospice.
Amidst ample entertainment, craft beer bursting out the taps and the promise of uninterrupted sports viewing for all –the monk certainly won’t be missed!
