It’s hats off to new owners of the Hatfield ‘Chace’, who have righted a ‘wrong’ as part of a substantial £260,000 refurbishment to restore the classic pub back into the Doncaster community.
The pub, seen captured with its proper name in historic photographs, has not only been restored to its pub glory complete with real ale and food served all day, but after being christened the Hatfield ‘Chase’ by previous owners, has also had its true name reinstated to the Hatfield Chace (with a c!) ready for the reopening 15th September.
Stonegate Pub Company bought the pub two weeks ago (21st August), immediately moving in painters to redecorate inside and out whilst the new team of twenty were recruited by new managers John and Debbie Slide, and trained to the high standards customers should expect from a friendly village pub.
“We were visiting the area when locals started telling us how the ‘c’ had been replaced by the ‘s’ and it really meant something to them!” said John. “We did a lot of research and believe the ‘c’ is the correct spelling dating back to the old hunting ground days – so that’s what the pub has once again become.”
With a diverse quality to capture the imagination of every generation, the food is definitely on point whilst an expansive range of gins and ales and Sky TV keep the pub very much local.
Starters vary from Classic King Prawn Cocktail and French Onion Soup to autumnal Cheese Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms. Even sandwiches keep the young at heart happy with Fish Finger Focaccia, and those tuned into pub favourites such as the Club Sandwich.
If it’s traditional pub fare with a chef’s edge you’re after then Guest Ale Battered Cod & Chips, autumnal Pies from Venison to Beef & Double Gloucester, or the range of Burgers, Ultimate topped with chicken, mushrooms, & Cheddar, to Veggie, might be your thing! Even steaks are 35 day matured and with two dining on Thursday Grill night from £15.99, there’s great opportunity to try out the rump, gammon, rib eye, beef long bone rib, and lamb.
For the modern-day foodies in the family, there’s more unusual dishes too such as the Lemongrass & Chilli King Prawns starter and Pear & Pecorino Pasta, alongside weekly chef specials leaving no doubt just about every family member has a place in the new pub.
Tradition brings real ale with four traditional national and local favourites on rotation. Meeting expectations of an entire village community no less than thirteen Great British Gins from Tanquerey, to Warner Edwards Victoria’s Rhubarb gin whilst the designated driver can rejoice in low alcohol Brewdog Nanny State or Strawberry & Lime Rekorderlig Cider.
“The Hatfield Chace is a fantastic site for the whole community. We’ve retained sports and added other reasons to visit including our Tuesday over 65’s club, Quiz night and Fizz Friday when bottles of Prosecco are just £13.95,” added John.
Other reasons to visit include Wednesday Burger Night, and of course a great range of Sunday Roasts – which all come with free top ups of roasties, Yorkies and gravy.
