As Croydon awaits completion of Surrey Street £1.1m renovations on its 700-year-old market, owner of the area’s landmark pub have reopened their own £325,000 restoration alongside a huge mark of respect for the iconic street traders.
The newly named ‘Market Tavern’, replaces what was the Goose at Croydon, showcasing its brand new look at a VIP last night (25th). The transformed pub in all its new glory is the first evidence of the new lease of life being breathed into the area.
New manager Nigel Gamble explaining the name change said: “It’s a nod of regard to the heritage of London’s oldest market emphasising community and localness which is what we’re all about.
“It may sound colloquial but the Market Tavern is a traditional, proper pub with an offer that today’s pub goer demands. Reverting back to the origins of pub names, we’re re-instilling the principles of a pub name being synonymous with its surroundings.”
With development being rumoured for some time, Nigel explained the timing of the refurbishment. “No one is going to say it isn’t time!” said Nigel Gamble. “Surrey Street is being developed so it was only right we put our hands in our pockets to make sure we fitted the new landscape. It’s just great timing for everything to come together like this.”
New opening hours from 8am to catch early market traders, craft beers, and a completely revamped pub with eye-catching features is . Attracting the sports fan, the ultimate viewing facilities will be installed including Sky and BT Sports; zoned screening across six HD screens and big screen; as well as Sports Table Service – no need to miss a goal as ‘referee’ (bar folk) will be serving throughout all the big sporting events.
Stonegate Pub Company bought the pub in 2010 when the company was first formed acquiring its first package of 333 pubs from Mitchells & Butlers.
