Historical York pub, the Roman Bath, has reopened following a six-figure investment, with the renovations marking the next chapter in the pub’s rich history.
The pub was originally called the Mail Coach after George Pencock, a former postal worker, became the landlord in 1823. Over a hundred years later, the pub was renamed the Roman Bath in 1930 after the discovery of a Roman bath house in its basement.
The Roman bath house was built for the VI and IX Legions and belonged to the city’s military fortress and is still available to be seen in the pub today. You can find the Roman Bath House Museum in the basement of the pub which features Roman artifacts, armour, weapons, and tiles.
Craft Union has thoughtfully renovated the pub, preserving its rich Roman heritage while enhancing its facilities. These improvements ensure the pub remains a cherished part of York’s community for years to come.
The pub originally closed its doors in January for the renovation while extensive work has been taking place behind the scenes to carry out improvements.
Situated on St Sampsons Square, the pub is reopening with the goal of establishing itself as York’s ultimate destination for socialising, entertainment and sport, featuring four new HD televisions around the pub’s interior with a large outdoor HD TV installed to enjoy the sport in the sun.
Famous for a rich history of live music, the Roman Bath’s music scene is going from strength to strength as the investment has seen the addition of a brand-new state-of-the-art sound system, allowing for an even better live music experience at the pub.
The Roman Bath also has all major sport channels as well as Sky Q, meaning the pub will broadcast football matches from multiple leagues for fans who want their EFL fix alongside sports such as F1, Tennis, Boxing, and Rugby.
A restructure to the pub’s layout has also taken place with the bar now being relocated to allow for a more open and spacious feel throughout, meaning guests can now be served more efficiently.
The Roman Bath boasts a fine selection of beers, ciders and wine, all at some of the most competitive price points in the area, as well as a large offering of no and low alcohol offerings, ensuring all guests are accommodated to.
The pub welcomes well-behaved dogs and is a favourite for guests enjoying a pint with their pet.
Tom Lakin, Operator of the Roman Bath, said: “All of us have spent so much time behind the scenes for the past few weeks making improvements to our pub, so it’s been great to welcome guests back to the pub to show off all our new features.
“We know the work completed has not only enhanced the warm and welcoming atmosphere here, but also strengthened the pub’s community spirit, all while keeping hold of the historical foundations that make the Roman Bath such a special pub.
“I’m particularly excited about our new sound system which will be available for all to hear throughout our reopening week with locals’ favourite, The Mothers, coming down to play a set for the ages.”
Reopening with a bang, this Friday sees York band, The Mothers, take to the stage with the pub open until the extended hours of 2am to welcome back an anticipated packed house of York residents.
The pub also offers a packed weekly events schedule, giving guests plenty of reasons to visit. Tuesdays are Tombola Tuesdays while Wednesday offers student deals through the night with a quiz from 7:30pm and karaoke from 9pm, inviting guests to test their knowledge against the smartest in York.
Guests can enjoy a special local live band every Friday and a live DJ plays every Saturday night, bringing the party atmosphere to the Roman Bath.
