The popular Thatchers pub in Portsmouth is open again following a £237,000 refurbishment and serving great British pub hospitality all day and every day.

The landmark London Road pub has an enviable position in the heart of the busy Portsmouth high street and is a much-loved pub by local residents, shoppers and businesses, having served customers for over 150 years.

Doors have re-opened following a complete makeover inside and out to give customers a friendly community pub to enjoy seven days a week.

The pub is part of the award-winning Craft Union Pub Company, who were named the Best Community Operator at the 2022 Publican Awards. It invested £237,000 in Thatchers during its recent refurbishment so the Portsmouth community can enjoy this friendly neighbourhood pub for years to come.

The style and appearance outside gives a taste of the high quality of the refurb inside as the pub is lighter, brighter and even more welcoming for all. The traditional character of the pub has been boosted with modern-day comforts much to the delight of regulars. New bar fittings, tub chairs and fixed seating, new décor and lighting have all added to the warmth and comfort of Thatchers.

It’s an unbeatable spot for sports fans – spectators and players alike – with outstanding viewing of Sky Sports and BT Sport as well as in-house darts and pool. Large HD screens and high-tech audio bring match days to life and the new darts surround and pool tables add to the sporting entertainment.

Delighted with the makeover and new at the bar is Carl Green who was a successful barber and tattoo artist before he ventured into the pub trade.

He said: “This is a great pub and it’s brilliant getting to know the regulars and meeting new people. People are at the heart of this city and this pub, and this is a great place to stop off and meet friends, family, neighbours and work colleagues – have a chat, have a drink, watch a match, whatever. We are here all day, every day whatever the occasion.”

Carl added: “The latest tech means we can show TV sports but at the same time we have the traditional pub games so customers can play pool or darts here too. Inside and out has been refreshed and all the new seating makes it even more comfortable. We are here for all the community, serving good quality, good value drinks with great service.”

The drinks menu has been extended with a wide choice of local, national and internationally renowned beers, wines, ciders and spirits, a choice of cocktails, plus soft drinks and low and no alcohol drinks. Customers don’t even have to leave their seat to order their favourite tipples as they can place their order via the Craft Union Order & Pay app and their drinks will be brought to them.

There has been a pub on the site of Thatchers for over 150 years. It used to be a two-bar local and known as the Thatched House until a major refit in 2002 when it was renamed, Thatchers and it continues to be an important part of Portsmouth’s pub scene.
