Built in the late 1840s, the building was originally established as the Royal Albert Hotel. The property was acquired by William Earnshaw, a master mariner, and was given its Railway Hotel moniker in 1866 owing to its close proximity to the Knottingley railway station. The site has since been bought and sold a number of times, but its heritage and 158-year-old name have remained steadfast in the Knottingley pub scene.
