As the Wales Rugby team is getting ready for its second warm up match against England, this time on home turf, the Railway Hotel, on Plymouth Road in Penarth, is gearing up a special viewing experience for its customers. The pub will be raising money for Help for Heroes throughout the match and the day, with a raffle, live music and even the odd jelly-shot on offer.
The raffle has some exciting prizes to be won, including a signed photo of the Welsh Captain, Alun Wyn Jones, a tour of the Tiny Rebel Brewery, in Newport, as well as some Prosecco and Lilley’s Cider up for grabs. There will also be the opportunity for customers to engage in some friendly competition of their own on the day, as they guess the time and scorer of the last try for just £1. Winners will take home half the pot, as well as some well-deserved pride, and the rest will be donated straight to Help for Heroes.
After the match local band, ‘Stavs Band’, will kick off from 8pm until late, allowing customers to celebrate in style, or drown their sorrows, depending on the outcome of the World Cup warm-up match.
Sasha Jones, Deputy Manager of the Railway Hotel, and the brains behind the initiative, is using the sporting event to do as much as she can for the veteran’s charity. On top of the event, she will also be taking part in the Cardiff 10K Road Race on Sunday 1stSeptember and there will be collection pots on the bar for customers to sponsor her effort.
Sasha said: “We’re only a few miles away from the Principality Stadium, but everyone knows we’re the place to watch the match! We’ve got screens covering every inch of the pub for the best viewing experience and our walls are adorned with the Welsh colours. There’s nowhere better to get behind the side.
“Everyone is already being very generous in supporting Help for Heroes, it’s a charity everyone can get behind and I’ve already had a couple of customers offer to sponsor me for my race. I really hope the event goes well and it would just be an added bonus for Wales to beat England at home!”
The event comes as part of Sasha’s participation in Stonegate Pub Company’s ‘Accelerator Programme’. The course is part of its award-winning development programme, designed to give staff the skills and knowledge they need to succeed and proceed within the company.
