Business is roaring again at the popular Red Lion Inn on the Bull Ring in Sedgely, Dudley following a £215,000 makeover as local MP for Dudley North, Marco Longhi visits.
The pub, which dates back to the 19th century, has an interesting past as it was once the village prison and the Red Lion is still connected to the Court House opposite by a passageway. It is also one of the landmark buildings on the Bull Ring which is so-named as bull baiting used to take place there.
The present-day pub is now a much-loved hub of the community and popular meeting place for all, a far cry from its gloomy past. There has been a complete makeover inside and out to give locals a friendly pub to enjoy all day, every day for years to come.
A highlight of the refurb is the unbeatable sports viewing. Long gone are the controversial days of bull baiting, customers can now watch teams battle it out on Sky Sports and BT Sport. There is unrivalled viewing throughout the bar with HD screens and audio bringing match days to life. A new darts surround and throw and new pool table add to the sporting entertainment on offer. Alternatively, relax with a drink and watch the world go by from the new tables and benches outside at front of the pub.
Welcoming customers back to the Red Lion is Ben Holmes and Emma Mortimer. Ben was brought up in the industry and has a wealth of experience managing pubs throughout the Midlands.
Ben said: “It’s exciting to be here for the next chapter in this amazing pub‘s long history. It has a bright future ahead and it’s great to meet the locals now we are open again. It has lots of character and a warm and welcoming feel. It was great for Mr Longhi to see all the newly decorated and furnished areas of the pub, especially the outside seating area, in all its glory with beams of sunshine.”
Marco Longhi, MP for Dudley North, said: “It was great to be able to visit The Red Lion in Sedgely and see its fantastic new look. The pub is a real hub for the community, and it was great to speak with Emma and Ben about the potential to welcome more of the community to the pub.
“I know Emma and Ben are doing a great job at maintain the standards of the pub and making it a success. I cannot wait for another visit to the pub in the future.”
The pub is part of the award-winning Craft Union Pub Company, who were named the Best Community Operator at the 2022 Publican Awards. It invested £215,000 in the Red Lion Inn during its recent refurbishment so the Dudley community can enjoy this friendly neighbourhood pub for years to come. It has retained all the charm and character of the long-serving pub and added some modern-day comforts.
Emma added: “This is a pub for everyone, for every day of the week and for all occasions. Pop in for a pint, enjoy a cocktail or share a bottle of wine, the bar is well-stocked to cater for all tastes. The latest tech means we can show TV sports but at the same time we have the traditional pub games so customers can play pool or darts here too. Inside and out has been refreshed and all the new seating makes it even more comfortable.
“Come in and see for yourselves! Sit back and enjoy a drink and a catch up with friends, family and neighbours. We are here for all the community, offering good quality, good value drinks with great service.”
The drinks menu has been extended with a wide choice of local, national and internationally renowned beers, wines, ciders and spirits, a choice of cocktails, plus soft drinks and low and no alcohol drinks. Customers don’t even have to leave their seat to order their favourite tipples as they can download and use the Craft Union Order & Pay app and their drinks will be brought to them.
