There will be spectacular double celebrations at the new-look Cardigan Arms in Corby old village for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and the Corby Pole Fair.

The traditional Corby Pole Fair, which happens every 20 years, has been celebrated by the Corby community for over 1,000 years. This year it will be held on Friday, June 3 coinciding with Her Majesty’s Jubilee festivites.

The Cardigan Arms, which is one of Corby’s oldest pubs, is at the heart of the community and these celebrations. Thousands are expected to join in the day of fun and entertainment as these two landmark events are celebrated on the same day.

The pub on The Jamb has an early licence from 6am ready for the dawn parade and bell ringing. The street will be closed as thousands are expected to join the joyous celebrations and enjoy the local pipe band, pop up food vans, garden party and much, much more.

It is run by Craig Haldane and Irene Screen who are well known in the Corby area and active supporters of many local community groups. Craig was brought up in the pub trade, his parents ran the Rockingham Arms and ex servicemen’s cub in Corby, and he went on to serve in The Navy before returning to the trade. He has been behind the bar at the Cardigan Arms for eight years.

Craig said: “This is a big day for the Cardigan Arms. It is amazing that we have two such big events – The Queen’s Jubilee and the Corby Pole Fair – on the same day. You can’t say this often but this really is a once in a lifetime event. This is something that we will all remember – such memories will be made, and it’s wonderful and a bit humbling to be part of it. This pub has its own history too and it’s good it is really looking its best for such a big occasion. It’s a great place, the folk of Corby do us proud and we can’t wait to celebrate the day and spend weeks, months and years after chatting about it over a pint.”

The pub, one of the oldest in Corby, dates back to 1796. It was named after the Earl of Cardigan, the principal landowner of the nearby Manorial Brudewell Family of Deene.

It is fitting that such an historic pub will be at the heart of these incredible celebrations. The 18th century inn is in its prime thanks to a recent refurbishment which included additional state-of-the-art TV sports viewing equipment, inside and outside, pool and darts, and extra-comfortable seating throughout.

The pub is part of the award-winning Craft Union Pub Company, who were named the Best Community Operator at the 2022 Publican Awards. It invested over £180,000 in the Cardigan Arms during its recent refurbishment so the Corby community can enjoy this friendly neighbourhood pub for years to come.
