The Southfield, on Southfield Road in Middlesbrough, will be hosting its very own ‘Escape Room’ from Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd July, in aid of The Great North Air Ambulance Service.

Deputy Manager, Todd Mitchell, and his team have worked tirelessly over the past few weeks to build the room inside one of the stores in the pub, creating an exciting game full of puzzles to solve, locks to break and codes to crack.

The room is designed for maximum of five people at a time, who must work together to escape the ‘Science Mystery’ themed puzzle, within an hour. The experience costs £10 per person, which, thanks to Todd’s upcycling of all the materials used to build the room, will go straight to The Great North Air Ambulance.

The event comes as part of Todd’s participation in the ‘Accelerator Programme’, a training course run by managing operator, Stonegate Pub Company, which includes a practical component, organising and producing a fundraiser for a chosen charity.

The programme is designed to give employees the tools to bridge the gap between Deputy Manager and General Manager, through education and dynamic group learning. The course aims to build the participant’s confidence, encourage continued independent learning and help them to work together effectively as team.

“It’s been a huge project getting the room together,” said Todd, “we’ve been looking to reuse and recycle wherever possible, collecting all sorts of materials over the last few weeks, from local market stall palettes, to some really excellent props donated by Teesside University and other various other donors. I can’t wait to lock our first escapees in!

“I’m really lucky to have such a great team working with me here at the Southfield, they’ve all really stepped up to help me get everything ready. The Escape Room will only be available for a limited time, so we’d like to encourage people to book their spots – I’ve organised some hospitality packages too, so players can enjoy some drinks and a meal as part of their experience.

“The Great North Air Ambulance is a really amazing charity, that does incredible work throughout the North of England. I have a very good friend who works as a volunteer for them, and the stories he tells me border on the unbelievable. It costs 5.1 million for GNAAS to operate, and they really on donations for a large portion of that, so I’m really proud to be supporting such inspiring work.”

Todd is one of only 28 Deputy Managers to be selected for this years Accelerator Programme. The training initiative is now in its 20th graduation cycle and has seen 337 Deputy Managers complete the course, raising over £200,000 for UK Charities between them.
