The Royal Oak in Radcliffe is challenging children in the Radcliffe area to grow the tallest sunflower over the next few months.

Chris Farman, Operator of The Royal Oak is providing children in the local area with a fun activity to participate in over the next few months, growing the tallest sunflower. Chris is giving out 200 pots filled with soil, and everything the participants will need to grow the sunflower. Over the next few months, children can monitor the growth of their sunflower through the charts they are provided with and share their progress through a Facebook group with other participants and their parents.

Once the competition comes to an end, whoever has grown the tallest sunflower, can bring it into the pub and it will be on display. The winner will also win a hamper full of goodies such as Lego and gardening growing activities. There will also be some runner up prizes as well, to commend everyone’s efforts and perseverance.

Chris said: “After getting all the local children involved with our Easter Egg Hunt that was in conjunction with the Parish Council, and them thoroughly enjoying it, myself and the team wanted to offer a fun initiative that all the children could engage and get involved with. The sunflower competition is about engaging the local community and raising awareness of the impact of horticulture. We are all so excited to see how the children do and to showcase the tallest sunflower in the pub. We encourage all to get involved as this will be a lot of fun.”

Children under the age of 16 can participate, and everyone participating has until 1 August 2022 to grow the tallest sunflower. To find out more information about the competition check out The Royal Oak’s website, Facebook page or pop into the pub.
