Much-loved pub The Royal Standard, Leicester is reopening its doors following an investment of over 200k, also making it the 500th pub of award-winning company, Craft Union!

The Royal Standard is remarkable in having stayed in the same Leicester family for generations. Chris Chappell, who was brought up in the pub by mum, (and previous operator), Susan Hallam, is now proudly reopening the venue to the public, with a spectacular launch-party weekend on the 10th – 12th March.

Chris said: “The pub has always been a highly popular city-centre pub, but now it has a new lease of life. Its new look is traditional but contemporary, with fantastic lighting that really showcases all the new furniture, décor’ and the new back-bar.”

Both Chris and Susan will be doing the honours of cutting a ribbon to celebrate the pub’s relaunch on Friday 10th and everyone is invited!

March 10th, 11th and 12th will see an explosion of activities at the pub including free welcome drinks for the first 100 customers from 6pm on the 10th, followed by ‘dance through the decades’ DJ music all night long. Another lucky 100 people will be treated to golden envelopes containing a colourful variety of prizes from eight-pint beer-towers to space-hoppers!

It is likely that the entire Chappell family will be attending the festivities as two of Chris’ sisters also run pubs and his three children enjoy any opportunity to take-part in a community event and be sociable. Mum, Susan, was originally headhunted to run The Standard in 1993 and Chris has now been at the helm for seventeen years.

Other highlights of the weekend include the Crafty Mascot on-hand in Leicester’s streets, ushering sports fans into the pub on Saturday 11th for some HD TV Premiere league action and an Easter-egg collection on Sunday for local children’s charities.

Entertainment will stay at the top of the agenda throughout each week with an event for everyone. Horse-racing games will play a big part of Monday and Tuesday socials and free-shots will be offered with the first Juke-box song played on Friday and Saturday nights. On Sunday, guests are invited to ‘Play your Cards Right.’

The Royal Standard’s history as a pub that welcomed its first visitors in 1929, means that the relaunch is just one marker in a timeline of extraordinary moments for its community.
