Licensee of The Summerfield Lee, Joe Courtney received a finalist award in this year’s Mayor’s Awards for Voluntary Contribution in Lewisham. Joe was nominated for the continuous charity and fundraising work that he carries out at the pub, alongside his team. The Mayor of Lewisham, Damien Egan congratulated him on his efforts and the nomination and presented him with a commemorative badge and certificate. The Mayor’s Awards for Voluntary Contribution recognises the individuals in the Lewisham area that have gone above and beyond for others and support their local community.
The Summerfield Lee stages various charity and fundraising events throughout the year for numerous local and national charities, these include the annual fundraising event the pub organises for Remembrance Sunday, supporting the Poppy Appeal. The pub hosts a raffle and offers entertainment during the day to raise money for The Royal British Legion, as well as being involved in the local parade, commemorating those who lost their lives during the war.
Well supported by the local community, the Homeless Run at Christmas sees donations of essential items such as gloves, hats and blankets which are then distributed to the homeless on the streets of London.
Other fundraising initiatives have taken place for The Sunny Days Children’s Fund and Great Ormand Street Hospital. Joe has also taken a personal interest in supporting those in need in the local community, raising funds for treatment of illnesses and supporting bereaved families.
Joe said: “I am humbled to have been nominated for such an award and to be able to use the pub as a platform to give back to the community. It is wonderful to see the impact that our fundraising efforts have made to individuals, charities, and causes. I would like to say a huge thank you to our regulars, friends and customers. The support we receive from you all is incredible, continually donating and attending our fundraising events and always coming back in such great numbers to see us at the pub. We will continue to host charity fundraisers and help anyone who needs it in our amazing community.”
