The Windmill on Hilderstone Road in Stoke-on-Trent recently hosted a coffee morning and cake sale, raising £1,235 for the University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) charity for Breast and Prostate Cancer Research. The charity provides funds to provide UHNM patients with the best treatment and care possible to help them with their recovery.
After being approached by regular customer, Jean Snape, the pub was delighted to host a fundraiser to support the cause. Jean was diagnosed with breast cancer 21 years ago and has since dedicated copious amounts of time to fundraise for the hospital where she received excellent care and all the team at The Windmill were happy to help.
As part of the bake sale, The Windmill hosted “The Great Windmill Bake Off”, challenging locals to compete to cook the best Victoria sponge cake. These were then put before the judging panel featuring one of The Windmill’s very own chefs, Philip Adams, as well as two regular customers Barbara Large and Paul Tudor who are both experts in catering. The cakes made were then sold to raise even more money for the charity.
There was also a live auction on the day with prizes donated by local business including a BMW gift set containing a thermos flask, golf ball bag and teddy bear, a selection of alcoholic beverages, and a new set of silverware.
Customers also had the chance to develop their first aid knowledge as they were joined by the First Responders from Fulford and District who gave a live CPR demonstration.
Andrew Farrell, General Manager at The Windmill said: “We are all so pleased with how much we have raised. I owe a special thanks to Jean Snape, who approached me with the idea of hosting a coffee morning and has been a huge help in organising the event. She is a truly inspiring woman.
“It was truly heart-warming to see the turnout and everyone was so supportive of the cause. I’d also like to thank the First Responders who joined us on the morning. Their demonstration was extremely helpful and something everyone could take away from the day. We hope to raise more money for the charity in the future as it is something very close to our hearts.”
