Washington’s historic old coaching inn, the Washington Arms, will be warming visitors and regulars’ hearts when it reopens on January 30, after a £150,000 renovation to restore its 16th century old world charm.
Landlady Wendy Tweddle, who has been at the pub for thirteen years, says the Washington Arms is known for its friendly and warm welcome, sports, and real ales, and its about to get even warmer after the much longed for restoration of an old chimney to bring back the olde-worlde open fire, alongside redecoration both inside and out.
“I know our locals have been waiting for this as everyone loves an open-flame fire,” said Wendy, adding that she’ll be offering customers a free glass of Prosecco on the 30th, plus live music on Friday February 2nd to celebrate the re-opening.
“This pub is the hub of our local community and we’re all very excited with what will be a refreshing new look, giving the whole place a fresh lease of life.”
Wendy hopes too that the resident ghosts will be happy with the new look. “There’s a little girl who sits at the top of the stairs and another who has been seen sitting in the window. But they’ve never troubled anyone and far from being at all creepy, the pub has a really lovely, welcoming feel about it.” Although, she adds, from outside the old coaching inn does have hidden depths.
“People come into our small, front bar and thinks that’s it, before we take them through into the large dining area beyond that overlooks our lovely big garden. It is quite a surprise for many new visitors what a lovely, open space we have for diners,” explains Wendy.
And there’s plenty for diners to enjoy at the Washington Arms too, with the King’s Feast menu offering amazing and delicious meals, with plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free dishes too.
